This film is adapted from Xiao-Sa’s novella, House of Joffre. Kuei-Mei is in her early twenties as she flees from Mainland China to Taiwan to stay with her cousin. Through his arrangement she is then married off to another immigrant from Mainland China who has with three children from his previous marriage. After the wedding, she soon discovers that her husband is irresponsible in his job and finances and has a gambling addiction. Kuei-Mei becomes the breadwinner of the family and moves to Japan to seek better income. She returns to Taipei and opens a restaurant named House of Joffre - after a street in Shanghai. After she is betrayed by her husband and struggles to build a meaningful relationship with his children, Kuei-Mei finally enjoys a better life at an older age but is soon diagnosed with cancer…
